I'll give you some answers that probably you won't get from others:
1) In my little part of the Trans-Bluegrass, one of the biggest indicators of potential deer are saddles on knife-edge ridges that allow deer to move between flowages with ease. I set up either on the saddle itself or overlooking the creeks that run down one side or the other.
2) Old erosion gullies on hillsides. In our cedar-choked woods, this is where you'll find a lot of nice acorn producing oaks. Also the gullies have less cover than the surroundings, so it's easier to see deer.
3) Lastly: If you're on a piece of property that has deer, look for where the vestiges of old tree stands are. Deer herds were sparser in the past. If you find an ancient piece of wood nailed in a tree, it means somebody was hunting there years ago.
I had an really nice spot picked out in 2001, and hunted it a lot and never saw a freaking deer. I noticed that there were several bits of wood in some of the trees uphill from where I was at. In 2002, I re-situated my stand to be closer to the the old stands and I've taken 8 deer from that site since. I'm only 150 yards up hill from the old site.
