It's 0640 on Sunday. Why am I not in the stand? It's Youth Weekend, why am I not in the stand with my son?
Saturday morning started off perfectly. #2 son was all primed to take a deer. First light came and zap! #2 was up to his old habits, dead asleep and snoring. We were back at the barn #2 made famous last year:
Late Season Youth Hunt
I let him sleep for a while and then got him up as best I could. There was no action, so all he was missing was a beautiful Fall morning-- Four species of Owl, calling to each other across Hootin Holler, turkeys gobbling on the roost like it was Spring again. The hawk came by to check us out before the crows chased him off. About the only thing missing were the gunshots. I counted a total of five before Noon.
About 0830, #2 wanted to start talking about going in.
"I don't see why," he said. "we aren't seeing anything." This was his response to my suggestion of staying out another half-hour or so.
"You won't see anything staring down between your legs." I said. I got up from our chairs and went over to the other side of the barn, and looked out between the cracks.
"You might want to come over." I said.
"Why's that?"
"Just come on over." I said. He complied.
"You might want to bring your rifle too," I added.
"Why?"
"So you can shoot the deer you're not seeing." I said.
#2 went back for the rifle and came over to my side of the barn. There were two doe out in the field. As we watched, two more came out. They were about 300 yards out, two far for the 30-30. It made for a nice half-hour show however.
"How did you know?" He said.
"I was just being a smartass." I replied. Of course, shamans never reveal their true secrets.
There's more to come on this, but this made a good place to stop.
